"Lynch Road fendertags"

1969

1970

1971

Tags are read from the bottom to the top, starting at the lower left corner.

Lynch Road tags are set up a little different then the other assembly plants, as you can plainly see above. The 1969 tag resembles the 1968 style tags, on the bottom line at least. The arrangement is the same, with the body style shown first, and then the engine code, transmission code, and then comes the scheduled build date, and finally the vehicle order number. Other plants show the complete VIN on the bottom row, which Lynch Road did starting in 1970, but for 1969, they jumped all the way to the top line, and then the last eight digits on the VIN are shown, starting with 9A283024. The fifth digit of the VIN is never shown on the 1969 tags. But when we combine the bottom row with the top row and then put in the correct code for the engine, we get - WM23M9A283024. This is the complete VIN for this car, and should match the VIN tag on the dash. You might wonder how I knew to put a "M" in for the 5th digit, because of the (A12) code seen above, which is the 440 Six Pack engine conversion package code. Looking at the next row up, we see some two digit codes. These are the paint and option codes. All plants used two digit codes for the paint in 1969, but for some reason, Lynch Road substituted two digit codes for the vinyl top and stripe codes. For Example: instead of (V1W) for white vinyl roof, you will see just (1W). You will also see this for the stripe code. They also left off many option codes that were common on the other plant's tags. You will generally only see some common items coded, like (A12) 440 Six Pack engine conversion, (C16) console, (H51) air conditioning, (N96) Ramcharger hood, and (26) which is the radiator diameter.

Jumping up to the fifth row up from the bottom, you will find some three digit numerical codes. They are, from left to right, the engine, rear axle, and transmission codes. Here we have one advantage of having a Lynch Road built car, the tag will tell us what rear axle it came with. These are the same three digit part number codes that you will find on the broadcast sheet. They did use different engines for certain applications. Here are the 1969 codes, including engine color:

This completes the codes for the engine, transmission, and rear axle. You will also see a five digit code and a six digit code on the top line of these tags. These are the special Lynch Road assembly line codes.

Here is the complete decode for the 1970 tag above, which also happens to be the tag for my 1970 Coronet R/T 440 Six Pack car. In 1970, they did not code the stripe on the tag, only if it was deleted, V88 would be on it. So my car came with a stripe, but to determine the color, you would need the dealer invoice, broadcast sheet, or the window sticker. I don't have any of those, only the car in it's unrestored condition, and the stripe that is on it...

This pretty much sums up Lynch Road fendertags. I didn't list all the regular sales codes, you can find them under the 1969 tag. I do recommend Galen Govier's little white books, they have all this information and more...
